The role of Security Architect will be a key position within the Group Technology, Group Security team in Newbury (UK).
The Security Architect in the Group Technology Information Security Architecture team demonstrates thought leadership in balancing the delicate interplay between business and security objectives. The security architect delivers strategic technology security input to major programmes, planning controls to counter emerging threats and evolving technology and contributing to a blueprint of technical controls with corresponding roadmaps.
The security architect will both take a long term view of the security landscape, bringing coherence to the control plane and at the same time support large programmes of work led by IT and the business to make generational change with mature security consultancy.
The security architect provides a sense of balance across the IT technical security controls and negotiates the sometimes challenging path between security enabling technology and the convergence of telecommunications and back office networks.
Technology achieves little without sound metrics, governance and operational processes that leverage the capabilities technology provides so it is important for the individual to understand how these disciplines assist each other to deliver the risk reduction and return on investment expected in this growing area.

Impact on the business:
This role will ensure that Vodafone’s security architecture road map adequately supports the business objectives moving forward. The security architecture strategy roadmap is a critical component of the overall strategy to protect the global Vodafone brand and our customer’s information. The security architecture team perform a crucial role as part of the wider Technology Security function in architecting innovative solutions that manage security risk in a cost effective manner.
The role will provide security consulting, budgeting, estimation and resource management for major programmes of work up to £500m in size leading to a budgetary management support requirement in the region of £1-2m.
Leadership and teamwork:
The role holder will be one of a team of Security Architects delivering world-class security solutions into the Vodafone business. They will also be expected to lead security solution design projects and to highlight and clearly articulate risk mitigation requirements to the business. The ability to lead and influence security strategy at a technical level is paramount, but the role holder should be business focussed, with the clear objective of being a business enabler.
Innovation and change:
The role holder will be responsible for driving the perception change from security from being seen as an inhibiter, to it being seen as a business differentiator.
Knowledge and experience:
The individual should have a significant amount of experience in network & IT security preferably from a telecommunications environment, and should be willing to broaden their skills across all aspects of technology security. The individual must have the ability to articulate an architectural vision as to how security services and technologies will be delivered across the Vodafone world-wide estate.
The individual will need to be a self-starter who takes opportunities for self-learning and who maintains a passion for the practice and is up to speed on the changing security landscape including cloud and ubiquitous mobile computing. The individual needs the ability to think at systems / architecture level I.e. How do all the parts of the solution fit together not just design at element level. The individual would also preferably have the following non-technical skills, Risk management, Project Management & Consulting.
Communication:
Must be able to articulate Vodafone’s Technology Security Architecture vision with regards to protection of all company critical assets across many different layers of management and stakeholders (internal and external). This communication stance will be exceptional and redoubtable. Should be able to work within a global environment and be sensitive to cultural considerations. Successfully filtered candidates must expect to be tested on these capabilities in the recruitment process.
As Security Architect your skills and qualifications will ideally include:
- CISSP
- Bachelors and/or Masters degree in a relevant field e.g. IT, Software Engineering, Information Security.
- May also have a mix of CISM, CISA, CRISC, CCIE, GSEC, CEH.
- Technology and Domain focus may include:

- Symantec SEP/CCS/CSP/DLP
- Sourcefire IPS
- Imperva WAF and DAM, Cyberark
- Arcsight SIEM, Websense, RedSeal, Tufin
- ITIL and IT service management
- Incident management and response
- PCI / Sarbanes-Oxley-Act section 404 compliance
- Multi-lingual – European Languages
