Central London Public Affairs Manager



The role of Public Affairs Manager is a wide and varied one, aimed at helping manage its relationships with political and external audiences. Working closely with the Head of Corporate Affairs you will oversee our parliamentary and government facing work.

The postholder will have experience of successfully managing the delivery of a range of public affairs projects on time and to budget. Well-developed written and oral communications are vital, as is the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across the organization.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and deliver important political and campaigning work.



Job purpose

* Working with the Head of Corporate Affairs, to oversee the development and delivery of the political work, particularly our work in Parliament

* To play a key role in ensuring the organisation influences the political parties ahead of the 2015 General Election

* To work with colleagues to best maximise the political opportunities arising from our campaigning work

* To manage and motivate staff, ensuring the delivery of key objectives

* To take the lead on key public affairs projects as required, working across the organisation and beyond to deliver the required results.



Key relationships - internal

* Reports to Head of Corporate Affairs

* Works closely with colleagues in the corporate affairs team and wider communications directorate

* Works with other colleagues across the organisation, particularly in our Strategy and Development directorate

* Works with Policy and Public Affairs teams across the devolved nations

* Works closely with the senior managers across the organisation

* Parliamentarians and their offices

* Civil servants

* Peers within the UK charity sector

* Industry opinion formers, media and other stakeholders.

Main responsibilities

* To work with the Head of Corporate Affairs in developing and delivering public affairs strategies and programmes for the organisation in particular the 2015 General Election Strategy

* To work with colleagues to consider how best to deliver and maximise political uptake from our campaigning work

* To manage effectively a team of staff, providing supervision and support in line with our policy

* To lead the organisations work in Parliament, and have a strong understanding of the various parliamentary routes through which to influence, particularly around legislation

* To develop and maintain a network of key contacts in Westminster for the organisation and to sustain relationships with those contacts

* To keep abreast of political developments that may impact on the organisation and its work, and to advise and communicate to colleagues how best to address such changes

* To liaise across the organisation to manage relationships with and influence key opinion formers in government, the children's sector and civil society as required

* To participate in or lead cross-functional projects as required, ensuring key deliverables are achieved and supporting the department's objectives as a whole.

* Responsibilities for all communications staff

* To actively participate in regular department and team meetings, contributing to strategy, discussions, and decisions which will be beneficial to communications activities

* To maintain an awareness of own and others' health and safety and comply with the Health and Safety policy and procedures

Person specification

* Substantial experience of success in contributing to an organisation's public affairs strategy

* High level of knowledge of how parliament and government work and the ability to provide accurate information and advice to colleagues on these issues

* In depth knowledge of a high profile public affairs team and awareness of political issues and developments

Highly developed management and team building skills, and ability to work well with others as part of a team, giving support and recognising expertise in others

* Highly developed verbal communication skills to convey information to a range of audiences in a clear, inspiring and confident way

* Excellent written communication skills to analyse, interpret and present complex information in a clear and persuasive way for a wide range of audiences

* Highly developed ability to establish, develop and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people, including senior level individuals to achieve desired outcomes

* Excellent organisational skills with the ability to organise and plan own work and the work of others to deliver objectives on time

* Ability to identify opportunities and to research and evaluate their viability in order to achieve desired outcomes

* Experience of using Windows-based software packages, including word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail and the internet.



Successful candidates will have experience of working in the charity sector
