Applications Product Manager
San Francisco Bay Area, US - Computer Hardware, Computer Software, Information Technology and Services
The Applications Product Manager, a member of the ASG product management organization, is focused on the development of new software applications. In this role, you will use Agile development methodology as well as customer insights, critical thinking and strategic perspective to define next generation products that closely integrate with devices. You will lead the iterative development of new technology experiences in an entrepreneurial role with a focus on execution. Your work will create new, breakthrough offers and revenue sources for HP.
Responsibilities & Performance Profile
· Think big. Free yourself from today's constraints and market environment. Describe large disruptive opportunities, and develop concrete plans for how to take advantage of them. Intuitively understand business models and strategy.
· Identify, define and communicate customer insights and pain points – represent the customer.
· Evangelize and communicate persuasively. Make cases that are impossible to refute or ignore. Use data appropriately, when available, while also tapping into other biases, beliefs, and triggers to convince the powers that be to part with headcount, money, or other resources and then get out of the way.
· Simplify. Know how to get 80% of the value out of any feature or project with 20% of the effort. Do so repeatedly, launching more and achieving compounding effects for the product or business.
· Prioritize incisively. Know how to sequence epics and increments (projects). Balance quick wins vs. platform investments appropriately. Balance offensive and defensive projects appropriately.
· Forecast the approximate benefit of a project by efficiently applying past experience and leveraging benchmarks. Measure benefit once projects are launched, and factor those learnings into their future prioritization and forecasts.
· Execute. Grind it out. Do whatever is necessary to ship. Recognize no specific bounds to the scope of your role. As necessary, you will recruit, produce buttons, develop business, escalate, tussle with legal, etc.
· Understand technical trade-offs (does not imply CS degree). Roughly understand the technical complexity of features in your backlog, without any costing input from developers. Partner with developers to make the right technical trade-offs and compromises.
· Understand good design (does not imply you are a designer). Appreciate great design and distinguish it from good design. Articulate the difference and directions to your counterparts.
· Write concise, effective copy that gets the job done. Understand that each additional word dilutes the value of the previous ones. Spend time and energy finding the perfect, not just sufficient, words for copy.
