Vertica Consultant

HP Enterprise Services Analytics and Data Management is seeking to identify highly motivated and qualified individuals for future Vertica Technical Consulting opportunities. In anticipation of these opportunities becoming available, completing a profile will allow us to evaluate your qualifications and interests and will allow us to stay connected. Our roles are client facing and require 50-75% travel.
The Vertica Consultant is responsible for setting up, tuning and maintaining the Vertica cluster environment as part of project work and/or ongoing solution operations. System integration is a key component to this job.
Typical Duties include:
- Providing Vertica Architecture Consulting to Customers in support of solution design activities
- Participating as a member of development teams as a Vertica Administrator, and contributing to strategic direction for overall architecture and operations
- Providing mentoring and guidance to other Technical Consultants
- Representing the HP Analytics and Data Management team to clients
- Demonstrating technical leadership, and exerting influence outside of immediate team
- Applying in-depth or broad technical knowledge to provide solutions across one or more technology areas (e.g. website development)
- Consulting with team members and other organizations, clients and vendors on complex issues
- Developing innovative solutions to complex business and technology problems
- Consulting with Customer to troubleshoot error conditions and migrate load processes from legacy system (like Teradata) to Vertica
- Consulting with Customers in optimal design of database projections
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer science or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of experience in DBA or application DBA activities
- Full understanding of Vertica architecture
- At least 1 year experience in managing a Vertica cluster
- Experience in Vertica optimization techniques such as projections and partitioning
- Able to write, tune SQL queries
- Understand column store databases
- Unix/Linux skills (including scripting)
- Understand high availability concepts
- Understands server tuning concepts (parameters, resources, contention, etc)
- Backup / restore/ Disaster Recovery experience
- Hardware knowledge (including network, disk subsystems, etc)
- Experience with data warehousing concepts and techniques including extensive knowledge and use of star/snowflake schema
- Proven ability in managing databases of 1-10TB in size (Vertica, Greenplum, Netezza, AsterData, Paracel, Exadata)
- Understanding of OLTP vs OLAP data administration needs
- Knowledge with ODBC/JDBC data connectivity
- Experience in ETL/ELT workflow management
- QA/Testing process experience
- Understanding and ability to participate in all phases of the SDLC including requirements gathering, business analysis, configuration management and quality control
Preferred Additional Experience
- Knowledge of Vertica's analytical capabilities and ability to perform analytics using built-in functions
- Experience with Hadoop a plus
- Experience integrating with enterprise BI platforms such as Spotfire, Tableau, QlikView, MicroStrategy, Business Objects, Cognos, etc…
- Vertica Certification from Vertica
