Robotics Scientist for 3D Printing

Description



HP Labs’ research into printing of inorganic materials is working towards hybrid printing of glass (and other inorganic materials) onto items that are already mass produced. As part of this activity we have a vacancy for someone primarily with experience in robotics, to lead the building of novel prototype robotic platforms that will be used to produce 3D printed structures on the surface of objects that are not planar. In addition to the experience in robot programming the candidates will need to show strong mechatronics skills.



HP Labs, initiates the investigation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects. It applies scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and innovation for HP products, services and solutions. Also HP Labs contributes to scientific literature and conferences, and participates in the development of patent applications. As a central function HP Labs participates in activities to establish thought leadership, intellectual property (IP), and technical influence internal and external to HP.



Responsibilities


  • Participate as a member of a team of research engineers to carry out the investigation, design, development, execution, and implementation of prototype robotic systems that will be used to print 3D stuctures on non planar surfaces.

  • Contribute to research plans, investigative procedures, and collection and analysis guidelines for assigned investigation;collaborate with internal and external partners to perform experiments and validations in accordance with overall research plan.

  • Develop and carry out processes for collecting, recording, and analyzing data; communicate results and conclusions to team members for review and feedback.

  • Prepare literature and presentations for peer review, publication, and delivery at industry and scientific events and conferences; create patent applications and supporting documentation.




Qualifications
Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's, Master's or PHD degree in Robotics, Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent

  • Minimum 4-6 years experience, including graduate or postgraduate research


Knowledge and Skills



Must have skills


  • Practical experience of robot programming

  • Proficiency with robot programming language(s)

  • Strong knowledge of robot design and operation

  • Mechatronics skills

  • Programming skills

  • Mathematics and scintific computing skills

  • CAD design

  • 3D printing experience


Benefical skills



  • STL format understanding

  • Materials science or biological engineeering background/interest

  • Eye for detail/familiar with precision

  • Strong creative skills

  • Strong analytical skills and effective problem solving ability

  • Ability to research technical issues and generate innovative solutions

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English.

  • Ability to effectively communicate research plans, proposals, and results.
