The Systems Business Analyst performs a critical function within the software development lifecycle, primarily around the requirements capture and translation of functional and non-functional requirements into development tasks. In this role, Systems Business Analysts will regularly interact with Product Managers, Product Business Analysts and Product Designers to discuss and clarify requirements on behalf of development, represent and explain the current system’s functionality, its limitations, and offer areas for improvement (technical debt).
The Systems Business Analyst will hold the product owner status within SCRUM / Agile projects, acting as a proxy for product management and representing business requirements on a daily basis within IT. In this regard, the Systems Business Analyst is the primary contact for clarification within IT on functional, non-functional and customer-centric questions and concerns, and represents the subject matter expert.
In this function, the Systems Business Analyst will be required to break down product requirements to high quality User Stories, suitable for consumption and estimation by Development and Quality Assurance Engineers. In the later phases of development, the Systems Business Analyst will close these User Stories to ensure new functionality matches business requirements. In addition, the Systems Business Analyst will own the prioritization of the product backlogs and be actively involved in the sprint planning.
Responsibilities
- Capture and translation of functional and non-functional requirements into development tasks in the form of User Stories.
- Subject Matter Expert on allocated systems, including the current and future operational state, limitations and opportunities for investment.
- Handle day to day development queries throughout the software development lifecycle and communicate requirements and clarifications to the team.
- Interact with third parties and other Systems Business Analysts to work through systems flows and requirements elaboration.
- Collaboratively drive optimizations within the development teams and globally across teams in terms of requirements capture, tooling and process improvements.
- Manage technical requirements across multiple development teams, ensuring that business requirements are implemented end to end. This includes dependency management in a technical and functional sense.
- Work closely with the Product Manager and stakeholders to analyze and understand client and business needs.
- Day to day analysis and management of change requests in relation to the project plans to ensure agreed deadlines are met.
- Take responsibility for quality of their deliverables.
